New Gloucester Veterans'

Monument

The  Goal of the New Gloucester Veterans Monument Project is for the New Gloucester, Maine Historical Society, Lunn-Hunnewell Amvets Post #6, New Gloucester Residents and Veterans to work together to construct the New Gloucester Veterans Monument.  This will be a place where the community can pay respect to all those from New Gloucester who have served our country and have been part of the military history of the United States.

We wanted to say thank you for your response to the August mailing.  Some very generous donations were made.  This put us in reach to complete the site preparation for the monument.  Thank you to everyone for their support.

We have sent letters to gravel pit owners in the area, asking for help with the gravel and other materials needed for the site.  The contractors have been very generous with their offers to help.  We thank you!

We would also like to thank the people who supported the Monument at the fair:

     * We added $290.00 from McCann Fabrication Fire-Pit Raffle.  Nordica Danieli was the winner of the fire-pit.

     * Again this year, Summit Adventures very generously donated the $ 395.00 proceeds from the Wrecking Ball Game to the New Gloucester Veterans' Monument.

Update on “Where is Dennis?”

Even with the weather we are having this winter, when possible and save, you can still see Dennis running with his America Flag for New Gloucester Veterans.

Dennis has now completed a mile for 750 of the 990+ New Gloucester Veterans.  He is now working on the Veterans of WW II.  When Dennis runs the mile for his grandfather, C. Leon McCann Jr., who was a WW II Veteran, other members of the McCann family will be joining him for that mile run.

If anybody would like to run with Dennis for a family member or friend who is a New Gloucester Veteran, contact Dennis to see when you would be running for that Veteran.

Look for the New Gloucester Veterans Monument at the Crystal Lake Fishing Derby on January 25th – Our Booth is right beside the Air National Guard Booth.

A map can be found at: http://www.crystallakederby.com under Activities tab.

WHERE IS DENNIS???

Have you seen Marine Veteran Dennis McCann on New Gloucester roads running with the American Flag?

Why is Dennis running? The following is from Dennis McCann’s Facebook Page:

“I AM RUNNING 1 MILE FOR EVERY VETERAN FROM NEW GLOUCESTER, FROM THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR TO THE PRESENT.  TO DATE THERE ARE 950 VETERANS. I AM DOING THIS TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE NEW GLOUCESTER VETERANSMONUMENT. I WILL POST A LINK TO THE DONATION PAGE. EACH MILE I RUN WILL BE DEDICATED TO A VETERAN AND BE POSTED. I WILL TRY TO COVER MOST OF THE MAJOR ROADS IN NEW GLOUCESTER. I WILL KEEP TRACK OF MY MILES WITH MY GARMIN AND POST IT AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK I WILL DO A FLAG RUN. I AM HOPING TO FINISH FOR VETERANS DAY 2014.”

Follow Dennis on his Facebook Page as he documents every run.  You can also support and honor our local Military Veterans by supporting Dennis as he runs the roads of New Gloucester.

On Veterans' Day, approximately 50 people gathered at the site of the future New Gloucester Veterans' Monument to honor all Veterans.

Dennis McCann and his family ran one mile around Upper Gloucester each carrying a flag.  When they returned to the Monument Site they were met by Lunn-Hunnewell AMVETS Post #6 Color Guard.  At the brief ceremony, State Representative Eleanor Espling spoke to honor all Veterans on Veterans' Day.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this Veterans' Day Ceremony at the New Gloucester Veterans' Monument a special event.  We are sure to only get bigger and better each year.

Thank you to Lynn Conger, Avis Ford and Thompsons Orchards for the coffee and donuts.
