New Gloucester Veterans'

The  Goal of the New Gloucester Veterans Monument Project is for the New Gloucester, Maine Historical Society, Lunn-Hunnewell Amvets Post #6, New Gloucester Residents and Veterans to work together to construct the New Gloucester Veterans Monument.  This will be a place where the community can pay respect to all those from New Gloucester who have served our country and have been part of the military history of the United States.

About Us:

On November 5, 2011, the New Gloucester, Maine Historical Society and Lunn-Hunnewell AMVETS Post #6 hosted “Thank You To Those Who Have Served”, an Open House to recognize and honor those that have given so much of themselves.

In preparing for the Open House, the New Gloucester Historical Society, with the help of many, many people, established a “Veterans Honor Roll” with over 875 names of veterans with ties to New Gloucester, starting with the Revolutionary War up to present day.

After the Open House, a number of people expressed an interest in a Veterans Monument and with the very generous donation from Richard McCann and his family; the perfect location for a monument is available.  A Veterans Monument Committee was formed and we are now ready to move forward with raising the funds for the construction and long-term maintenance for a New Gloucester Veterans Monument in Upper Gloucester.

The Monument will be located at 1029 Lewiston Road in Upper Gloucester on land donated by the McCann Family.

About the Monument:

The 1968 Veterans Monument located on the Masonic Hall lot will be moved and placed on a red granite base at the new location and will be the center of the New Gloucester Veterans Monument.  Two American Red Granite Wings with the six military emblems will be placed on each side of the center monument.  There will be six Gray tablets for the 960+ New Gloucester Veterans Names. The area under the monuments will be cement with some bricks.

Flagpoles with the American Flag, State of Maine Flag and POW/MIA Flag will be in back of the monument and will fly from Memorial Day to Veterans Day each year.
